New faculty

Medical Center leadership is proud to announce the following additions to its faculty and leadership staff.

Albert L. Lin, M.D.

Dr. Albert L. Lin, a recent vitreoretinal surgical fellow at the University of Virginia, has joined the Medical Center faculty as an assistant professor of ophthalmology.

After receiving his B.A. in chemistry cum laude from the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, in 2007, Lin earned his M.D. in 2011 at UMMC, where he completed a preliminary year internship in 2012 and an ophthalmology residency from 2012-15. He then went on to a vitreoretinal surgical fellowship in the University of Virginia Health Systems, Charlottesville, from 2015-17.

The author or coauthor of four articles in peer-reviewed scientific publications, Lin has given 13 presentations nationwide. An active member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Society of Retina Specialists, Lin’s clinical and research interests include clinical outcomes regarding surgical retina, age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, choroidal melanomas and uveitis.

Andrey Markovich, Ph.D.

Dr. Andrey Markovich, a recent medical physics resident at UMMC, has joined the Medical Center faculty as an instructor in radiation oncology.

After receiving his B.S. and M.S. in physics and quantum electronics from the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology, Russia, in 1997 and 1999, respectively, Markovich served as a research assistant in the Laboratory of Turbulent Multiphase Flows at the Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, Beer-Sheva, Israel, where he earned his Ph.D. in mechanical engineering in 2007. He then was a researcher in the Microgravity Research Center at the Universite Libre de Bruxelles, Brussels, Belgium, from 2007-09 before coming to the United States in 2010 as a research associate in the Chemistry and Biochemistry Department at Kent State University, Ohio. A graduate student researcher in the Radiation Oncology Department at the Clevelend Clinic Foundation, Ohio, Markovich earned an M.S. in medical physics there in 2014. He then served as a research assistant in the Physics Department at Cleveland State University before coming to UMMC in 2015 as a medical physics resident in the Radiation Oncology Department.

He is an active member of the American Association of Physicists in Medicine.

Robin Benson Thompson, R.N., M.S.N.

Robin Benson Thompson, recently an associate degree nursing instructor at Hinds Community College, has joined the Medical Center faculty as an assistant professor of health sciences and director of instructional development and distance education in the School of Health Related Professions.

After receiving her B.S.N. from Alcorn State University in 2004, Thompson joined River Region Health System, Vicksburg, as a staff nurse and became a nurse residency program educator/health educator there in 2006. She also served as a staff nurse at Batson Children’s Hospital from 2005-06. Thompson earned her M.S.N. at Alcorn State in 2010 and served as associate degree nursing instructor at Hinds Community College and academic coach for Purdue University’s online R.N.-to-B.S. Completion Program from 2010-17. She also has served as an academic coach for the University of Texas at Arlington’s online R.N.-to-B.S. Completion Program, the University of Louisiana at Lafayette’s online R.N.-to-B.S. Completion Program, and the Columbus State University’s online R.N.-to-B.S. Completion Program.

A member of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society and several other professional organizations, including the National League for Nursing, Thompson’s research interests include the use of simulation for clinical preparation, the effectiveness of academic electronic health records in student readiness, and obesity and obesity-related health disparities among African-American adolescents from the Mississippi Delta.
